Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) poured in a game-high 26 points to power the Erskine Flying Fleet (14-11, 12-7) past the Valkyries of Converse College (3-19, 2-16) 80 to 62 this afternoon in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action.
With three games remaining, the win keeps the Fleet in contention to host in the opening round of the conference tournament at the end of this month. The Fleet are currently in a three-way tie for fourth place with the top four teams hosting in the opening round.
After trailing most of the first half, Erskine closed out the period with a 15 to 6 run. Potter scored six points during the run while sophomore
Ashley Mull (Belmont, NC, South Point High School) hit a 3-point shot to extend the Fleet lead to ten points. Erskine settled on a 40 to 31 lead at intermission.
Converse rebounded from their halftime deficit to tie the game midway through the second half. Margo McDill scored on a pass from Jakyra Washington to tie the game at 48 to 48.
With seven minutes remaining, Erskine tallied ten unanswered points to grab the lead for good. Sophomore
Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA, Governor Mifflin High School) ignited the run with a three-point shot and followed up with two free throws. Erskine won the game 80 to 68.
In addition to Potter's 26 points, sophomore Kristin Giles had 18 points along with 6 assists.
The Valkyries were led by Washington's 17 points.
Erskine travels to Barton College next Wednesday in a pivotal conference match up. Barton currently holds a half-game lead over the Fleet in the conference standings.
