Ashley Mull (Belmont, NC, South Point High School) came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points in the Erskine Flying Fleet's 78 to 70 road win over the Falcons of Pfeiffer University (5-11, 4-8) in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action at Werner Gym.
Mull went 7 of 11 from the field, including 5 of 9 from behind the arc, to spark the Fleet to the eight point victory. Mull also contributed 3 assists and 5 rebounds in the win.
The Fleet found themselves trailing by six at intermission after leading by as many as twelve in the first half. The Fleet extended an early four point lead to twelve points with just under six minutes remaining in the first half. Mull drilled one of her five 3-pointers to start the run and senior
Andrienne Bannerman (Wilmington, NC, Pender High School) scored five points, including one from behind the arc.
The home squad came rolling back in the final five minutes of the half to grab a six point lead at halftime. The Falcons attacked the basket, earning six trips to the free throw line where they went a perfect 12 for 12. For the half, the Falcons were a perfect 17 of 17 from the charity strip.
Still trailing by double-digits midway through second half, the Fleet pulled to within five points on a 3-point basket by Bannerman and layup by
Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA, Governor Mifflin High School). Espinosa scored 9 of her 11 points in the second half.
Following two Falcon free throws, the Fleet used two defensive stops to spark a 7-0 run that tied the game at 61 to 61 with 7:27 left to play. Sophomore
Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) threaded a pass to a cutting Bannerman for the layup and Mull followed with a 3-point shot. Sophomore
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) tied the game on a layup and gave the Fleet their first lead since the first half by converting an old-fashion 3-point play.
Erskine immediately extended their lead to two possessions on a 3-point basket by
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School). That would be as close as Pfeiffer would come as the Fleet won by eight 78 to 70.
Stuger finished with her third straight double-double, tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) also pulled down double-digit with 11 rebounds as Erskine dominated the boards 43 to 32.
Pfeiffers' Meg Pitchard led all-scorers with 22 points. Teammates Carter Williams and Dajea Scott knocked down 15 points each.
Erskine will seek their third straight win tomorrow against the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
