Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) posted a double-double of 17 points and a career-high 18 rebounds to lead the Erskine Flying Fleet (14-12, 9-9) past the Falcons of Pfeiffer University (5-21, 4-14) 89 to 64 tonight in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action at Belk Arena.
With the win, Erskine secures a winning record after winning only three games last year. In addition, it also marks the first time in 34 years that both Erskine basketball teams will have a winning season in the same year.
Midway through the first half, Erskine rattled off ten unanswered point to build their lead to double-digits that they would never relinquish. Sophomore
Andrienne Bannerman (Wilmington, NC, Pender High School) scored five of the Fleet's ten points, opening the run with a layup off a nice pass from teammate
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) and capping off the run with a 3-point basket.
In the second half, Head Coach Russ Gregg worked in his entire bench, playing all fifteen players with thirteen players scoring a point.
Freshmen guards
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School) and
Marnasha Eugene (Lithonia, GA, Stephenson High School) scored 13 and 11 points respectively while Bannerman finished with 11 points. Senior post player
Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) came off the bench to contribute 7 points and 12 rebounds.
For the Falcons, Alexis Stallard tallied a game-high 22 points. Amy Steller came off the bench to score 12 points.
Erskine secures the #6 seed in the upcoming Conference Carolinas Basketball Tournament Powered by OrthoCarolina to start this Saturday. Erskine will travel to face #3 seed the University of Mount Olive. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
