Erskine storms back to beat Converse 81 to 61

Box Score Spartanburg, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet stormed back from a fourteen point halftime deficit to crush the Valkyries of Converse College 81 to 61 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action.

Erskine found themselves trailing 41 to 27 halftime.  The Fleet struggled from the field, going just 7 of 35, including an anemic 1 for 16 from 3-point range.  Meanwhile, Converse shot a solid 45% from the floor, including 4 of 9 from behind the arc, to secure the fourteen point halftime lead.

In the second half, Erskine turned up the defensive pressure and went inside to junior Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) and freshman Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School), who combined for 25 points and 18 rebounds in the second half.

Over a three minute span, the Fleet erased a ten point deficit to take a two point lead at 53 to 51.  Freshman Marnasha Eugene (Lithonia, GA, Stephenson High School) came off the bench to spark the run, scoring five of her eight points.

The lead exchanged hands four more times before the Fleet used a 7-0 to take the lead for good at 66 to 58.  Potter contributed four points while freshman Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School) added a 3-pointer.

Erskine limited Converse to just 7 of 31 from the field and forced 13 turnovers in the second half.

Potter posted her third double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 28 points along with 10 rebounds.  Stuger recorded her first collegiate double-double, contributing 10 points and 5 assists while grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds.  Freshman Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) finished with 15 points.

The Valkyries were led by Brooke Garrison's 23 points.  Kayla Garrett was the only other Converse player to finish in double-digits with 13 points. 

Erskine completes their 3-game road trip this Wednesday against King University.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
