Box Score Due West, S.C. – The Flying Fleet (5-4, 3-1) won today´s Conference Carolinas clash against the Bulldogs of Barton College (2-5, 1-2) 78 to 66.
After a rough start in the first few minutes, it was sophomore
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) brought the Flying Fleet with a basket to shorten Barton's early lead to 7 to 2. From then on, the Flying Fleet was on a run. Within minutes, Erskine tied the game at 7 to 7. Erskine took complete control over the game and with less than 3 minutes left in the first half, senior
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) expanded the lead to 24 to 15. By halftime, Erskine led 31 to 19.
Led by
Ashley Espinosa (Reading, PA, Governor Mifflin High School), the Flying fleet continued the second half the way they finished the first one. Espinosa, who scored a game-high 20 points, made her way down the court and extended the Fleet's lead over the Bulldogs with a beautiful shot to 44 to 25. The Bulldogs were unable to catch up with the Fleet and had no chance against Erskine´s strong defense. With three minutes remaining, Coach Gregg cleared his bench.
Potter expressed confidence and happiness after the game: "Every player on the team got in, making this a complete team win! Ashley Espinosa led the way and today was a great end to our conference play for the semester."
Barton had three players reach double-figures, led by Alexis Johnson's 14 points. Caila Carter and Shatisha Dukes contributed 11 points each.
With today´s win against the Bulldogs of Barton College, Erskine ended their conference play for this fall semester. On December 16th, the Flying Fleet will complete the calendar year with a non-conference game against the Trojans of Anderson University. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm at Anderson University.
