Box Score Due West, S.C. – Erskine lost their conference opener to King University 64 to 61 tonight at Belk Arena. With the loss, Erskine drops to 2-4 overall while King University picks up their third win, second in a row, to improve to 3-2 overall.
With just forty seconds remaining, it appeared King had clinched the win after Sydney Harris stole the ball and made one of two free throws to put King up by four points at 62 to 58. On the Fleet's ensuing possession, freshman
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School) drilled a 3-point shot from the corner to pull the Fleet within one. Following a Fleet timeout, Coach Gregg's squad stole the inbounds pass but missed the short jumper in the paint much to the crowd's dismay. King's Chelsea Bowling made her two free throws and Erskine's desperation heave fell well short.
While Erskine had nine players score, only Giles reached double-figures, scoring a career-high 20 points. She also shared team-high honors with 6 rebounds.
King was led by Bonnie Durrett's double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds while Harris finished with 16 points.
Erskine travels to Barton College this Saturday. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
