Box Score Orangeburg, S.C. – Erskine held off a late rally by Claflin University to win on the road 74 to 72 in non-conference women's basketball action at Tullis Arena. With the win, Erskine evens their record at 4-4 overall while Claflin slips to 3-5 on the season.
Trailing by three at intermission, Erskine's defense got two block shots to ignite a 7-0 run with eight minutes remaining. Freshman
Marnasha Eugene (Lithonia, GA, Stephenson High School) sparked the run hitting two free throws then racing the length of the court for an easy layup off a block by fellow freshman
Raygon Hendrix (Summerville, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School). Hendrix wrapped up the run, nailing a 3-point shot after junior
Tara Potter (Charlotte, NC, Bandys High School) blocked Karahn Scott's shot.
Following back-to-back turnovers in the final minute that allowed Claflin to recapture the lead at 72 to 71, Erskine's
Andrienne Bannerman (Wilmington, NC, Pender High School) found
Naomi Stuger (Marietta, GA, Kell High School) cutting to the basket to regain the lead with 15 seconds left to play.
Bannerman blocked Claflin's last ditch attempt to secure the win for the Flying Fleet.
Hendrix led all scorers with a career-high 26 points. Freshman
Kristin Giles (Union, SC, Union County High School) contributed 13 points while Potter and Stuger added 12 and 10 points respectively. Bannerman led the Fleet on the boards with 8 rebounds.
Claflin had four players finish in double-figures led by Jaquanna Davis' double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Uniqua Mitchell finished with 15 points while Brittani Goodwin had 12 points and Kiara O'Neil with 10 points.
Erskine does not return to the hardwood until after New Year's Day when they travel to Southern Wesleyan University on Thursday, January 2
