Box Score Spartanburg, S.C. – Erskine won their second road game in a row trouncing Converse College 71 to 60 tonight in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action.
The first half was very close as neither team gained more than a four point advantage. Converse (0-17, 0-13) took their largest lead of the half in the first minute of play on two free throws and layup by Samira Gillcrese. Converse’s lead was short-lived as Erskine (2-17, 1-12) took their first lead two minutes later on a short jumper by
Haleigh Spaulding (Ocala, FL) and extended it to their largest lead a minute later when
Tori Whittenberg (Mauldin, SC, Mauldin High School) hit her first of four 3-point shots. The lead exchanged hands ten more times over the course of the half with Converse holding a one point advantage at intermission 32 to 31.
Erskine retook the lead on their first possession of the second half on another 3-point basket by Whittenberg and never trailed again. The closest Converse got was within one point on a couple of free throws by Brooke Garrison shortly after Whittenberg's three pointer but never seriously threatened the Fleet lead after that. Erskine maintained a comfortable 6 to 9 point lead for the rest of the half and won the game 71 to 60.
Whittenberg led all scorers with a career-high 23 points. She also had 6 rebounds to go along with 3 assists and 4 steals. Spaulding was the only other Fleet player to reach double-digits with 13 points. Junior
Jana Dixon (Conyers, GA, Heritage High School) came off the bench to grab a team-high 7 rebounds and score 8 points.
Converse was led by Gillcrese’s “double-double” of 19 points and 10 rebounds while Garrison contributed 18 points in her relief role.
Erskine returns home this Saturday to host in-state conference rival Coker College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
