Erskine survives late Pfeiffer rally to win 73-67

Box Score Due West, SC – Porsha Morgan tossed in 31 points to lead Erskine Flying Fleet past the Falcons of Pfeiffer University 73 to 67 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Belk Arena.  With the victory, Erskine climbs to within a game of .500 at 11-12 overall and is 8-7 in conference.  On the other side, Pfeiffer slips to 11-11 overall and 6-7 in conference.

Trailing 11 to 12 midway through the opening period, Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) converted an old-fashion three-point play that ignited a 17-0 Erskine run.   Senior Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy)capped off the run with layup off a Morgan steal.  Later Morgan hit a jumper to put the Fleet up twenty at 41 to 21 to end the first half.

Trailing by twenty-six points, Pfeiffer staged a ferocious comeback at that point scoring 10 unanswered in less than three minutes to cut the Fleet lead to sixteen points at 54 to 38.  After a basket by teammate Vontenea Williams, Pfeiffer’s Brittany Cox scored the next eight points on consecutive 3-points baskets and a running jump shot in the lane.  After swapping several baskets, Pfeiffer used another quick offense burst by outscoring the Fleet 14-2 to draw within four at 63 to 59.  Again Cox led the assault for the Falcons scoring 9 of the 14 points on two 3-point baskets and an old-fashion 3-point play.  With 2:23 remaining, Pfeiffer tied the game at 67 to 67 with 2:23 but following misses by both teams Morgan penetrated the lane to give the lead back to the Fleet with little over a minute left to play.  Erskine persevered by hitting four of six free throws in the final minute to ice the 73 to 67 victory.
