Box Score Due West, SC – Erskine’s
Rosa Powell (Lilburn, GA, Brookwood High School) drilled a 3-point basket to open the game and the Flying Fleet never trailed as they rolled past the Valkyries of Converse College 95 to 70 in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action at Belk Arena. With the victory, Erskine extends their win streak to four games as they improve to 8-9 overall and 5-4 in conference. Converse College falls to 2-16 on the season and 2-7 in conference.
All thirteen Erskine players played tonight with five players reaching double-figures in scoring. Leading the assault for the Fleet was senior
Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy) with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Fellow senior
Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) added 17 points while handing out a season-high 9 assists from her point guard position. At the other guard, junior
Sha'Niqua Whitley (Columbia, SC, Ridge View High School)contributed 13 points along with 5 assists and Powell had 11 points. Sophomore
Lindsey Weidenaar (Evans, GA, Lakeside High School) came off the bench to hit 4 of 7 three-point shots to finish with 12 points.
The Valkyries had two players earn “double-doubles” on the night with Colleen Lueng leading the charge with a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds. Samira Gillcrese had the other “double-double” with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Whitley got the Fleet rolling offensively in the first half igniting two Erskine runs. Whitley started the first run with two steals just minutes into the game giving the Fleet a 15-7 lead and forcing Converse to take a time out. Midway through the opening period, Whitley lead the Fleet on a 22 to 6 run blowing the game open at 40-17.
Converse had a 16-8 run before the close of the half to trim the Erskine lead to fifteen points at 48 to 33.
Converse never threatened as the Fleet stretched their lead to twenty points and won the game going away at 95 to 70.
Erskine looks to extend their win streak this Saturday as the Fleet travel to Laurinburg, North Carolina, to play Saint Andrews University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
