Due West, SC – The Lady Fleet used a 21-2 run midway through the second half to take a 76-67 victory over Converse College Tuesday night in Conference Carolinas basketball action.
The Valkyries took a 3-0 lead on a three pointer by Brandy Williams just eight seconds into the game. They would continue to lead and would make is a 23-13 game with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half. A layup by Denicsha Bennamon (Goose Creek, SC, Goose Creek High School) would cut the lead to eight and spark a 13-0 run for the Fleet. Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) would drain a jumper to tie the game up at 23 and then another jumper by Neci Allen (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) would put Erskine up by two and go into half time leading 29-24.
A three point basket by Jasmine Middlebrooks four minutes into the second half would put Converse back ahead by one point, but the lead would be short lived as Morgan would sink another jumper to give the lead back to the Fleet. The Valkyries would battle back to regain the lead 44-43 with 10:21 remaining, but the Erskine defense would just two points over the next six minutes and the Fleet would make it a 64-46 game with 4:30 remaining. Converse would cut the lead to seven down the stretch, but Erskine would hit seven free throws in the last 1:30 to seal the victory.
Morgan led all scorers with 23 points, while Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy) added 18 to go with a team high eight rebounds. Also reaching double figures for the Fleet were Jean Marie Harris with 11 and Bennamon with 10. Williams led the Valkyrieswith17points and Middlebrooks pitched in 11.
With the win Erskine improves to 9-12 overall and 7-8 in the conference, while Converse falls to 4-18 and 4-11.
