Spartanburg, SC – Senior Jean Marie Harris hit a leaning jumper with two seconds remaining to lift Erskine to an 81-79 victory over the Valkyries of Converse College in Conference Carolinas women’s basketball action. The Fleet victory (3-8, 2-4) snapped a three-game win streak for the Valkyries (3-11, 3-4).
The Fleet sprinted out to an early lead behind back-to-back jump shots by Harris (Fort Mill, SC, Indian Land). The Fleet built their lead to nineteen points with just seven minutes remaining before the Valkyries closed out the first half on a 24-13 run to cut the Fleet lead to eight points at 45-37.
The Fleet maintained their lead to open the second half. At the midway point in the half, the Valkyries went on a 17-6 run to tie the game at 72-72. The last five minutes featured three lead changes and three ties. With 28 seconds remaining, Converse’s Latrell Nackins made a nice move in the paint to tie the game 79-79. Following a Fleet timeout, junior point guardPorsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) passed the ball to Harris who hit the game winning shot with just two seconds left on the clock. Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy) stole the long desperation inbounds pass to seal the victory for the Fleet.
Harris finished 23 points while Morgan had a game-high 25 points. Senior Neci Allen (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) earned her second “double-double” of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. For the Valkyries, Nickens had a team-high 19 points.
The Fleet return home to host Augusta State University on Monday. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
