Furman Defeats Fleet 87 to 53

Greenville, SC – Local division I opponent Furman University defeated Erskine 87 to 53 in non-conference women’s basketball action at Timmons Arena.  The loss snaps a two-game win streak for the Fleet as they drop to 2-5 on the season.  It is the third NCAA division I opponent the Fleet have played this season.   Meanwhile, Furman University extended their win-streak to four games as they improve to 5-2 on the season.

The Fleet pushed the Lady Paladins in the early stages of the game.   Junior Porsha Morgan (Columbus, GA, LaGrange Academy) knocked down a jump shot at the ten minute mark to give the Fleet a 19 to 17 advantage.  Unfortunately, Furman responded with a 28-6 run to close out the half leading 45 to 25.

Furman continued to extend their lead opening the second half on a 10-0 run.  At that point, Furman coach Jackie Carson emptied her bench.

Furman dominated the boards 64 to 33, scoring 28 second chance points to the Fleet’s ten points.

Morgan led the Fleet with game-high 17 points.   Fellow junior Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, GA, Pinewood Christian Academy) added 12 points and had a team-high 5 rebounds.

Furman had five players reach double-digits led by Kelly O’Connor’s 16 points.  Kendra Berry earned a famed “double-double” on the night with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Erskine will take time off for Christmas Break before returning to action on Monday, January 3rd, at 5:30 p.m. at Queens University.
